THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY

One of New York City’s most celebrated cultural and educational institutions, The New York Library comprises 4 research libraries, 88 neighborhood branches, 5 exhibition spaces, and an expansive catalog of online resources. To ensure this legacy institution was recognized as far more than a passive repository of knowledge and scholarship, the Library required an identity that repositioned it as a vibrant, accessible, and pioneering resource for all New Yorkers. To meet this need and to recast the Library's role in the digital age, NYPL’s in-house team redesigned its logo and launched a new identity system in 2009.

Over the course of a decade, the brand continually gained strength and recognition and evolved through brand refreshes. With OCD (The Original Champions of Design), iterations included comprehensive sub-brand systems and guidelines for two Library research locations: The Schomburg Center for Research and Black Culture and The Library for the Performing Arts.

Related supporting resources include a robust brand center to drive consistency across the organization’s myriad sites and stakeholders, and an expanded design system that accounted for growing digital and signage needs.
