FLAGSHIP LIBRARY WAYFINDING SYSTEM

The Library’s flagship location receives more than 3.1 million visitors every year, yet its historic architecture makes it notoriously tricky to navigate. In 2017, The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building was in desperate need of a wayfinding system that would help patrons and tourists navigate the iconic building’s many offerings.

The building’s first wayfinding system was produced in-house and was a complicated endeavor. It required input from a variety of stakeholders and needed to adhere to a variety of parameters, including preserving the architectural integrity of the landmark building, flexibility to be removed for special events, and a need for frequent content updates.

In 2021 this successful signage was updated in partnership with Capital Planning and Beyer Blender Belle. The design preserved the integrity and core components of the original while upgrading the frame material to bronze and using a typeface that reflected the new, research-driven vision for the building.
